Lower Back Pain

The low back supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday motions such as bending and twisting. Muscles in the low back are responsible for flexing and rotating the hips while walking, as well as supporting the spinal column. Nerves in the low back supply sensation and power the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet.

Low back pain can incorporate a wide variety of symptoms. It can be mild and merely annoying or it can be severe and debilitating. Low back pain may start suddenly, or it could start slowly—possibly coming and going—and gradually get worse over time.

MECHANICAL PAIN

  • Pain that is dull or achy, contained to the low back
  • Stinging, burning pain that moves from the low back to the backs of the thighs, sometimes into the lower legs or feet; can include numbness or tingling (sciatica)
  • Muscle spasms and tightness in the low back, pelvis, and hips
  • Pain that worsens after prolonged sitting or standing
  • Difficulty standing up straight, walking, or going from standing to sitting

RADICULAR PAIN

  • Mechanical pain. By far the most common cause of lower back pain, mechanical pain is pain primarily from the muscles, ligaments, joints (facet joints, sacroiliac joints), or bones in and around the spine. This type of pain tends to be localised to the lower back, buttocks, and sometimes the top of the legs. It is usually influenced by loading the spine and may feel different based on motion (forward/backward/twisting), activity, standing, sitting, or resting.
  • Radicular pain. This type of pain can occur if a spinal nerve root becomes impinged or inflamed. Radicular pain may follow a nerve root pattern or dermatome down into the buttock and/or leg. Its specific sensation is sharp, electric, burning-type pain and can be associated with numbness or weakness. What chiropractors term sciatic pain. It is typically felt on only one side of the body. However can be on both sides of the legs when stenosis is present.

Headaches can be debilitating and a holistic approach is essential.

The different types of headaches are:

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. It can cause mild, moderate, or intense pain behind your eyes and in your head and neck.

A tension headache can feel like a tight band around your forehead. Tension headaches are caused by muscle tension in the head and neck, or poor posture.

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches, which occur in cyclical patterns or cluster periods, are one of the most painful types of headache.Cluster headaches are a rare but very painful type of headache in which headaches occur in a group, or cluster.  This type of headache can last from 15 minutes to 3 hours, repeating up to eight times a day.

Sinus Headaches

Sinus headaches happen when the sinus passages behind the eyes, nose, cheeks and forehead are congested. A sinus headache can be felt as an uncomfortable pressure behind the forehead, but can also be felt anywhere in the sinus area. Pain can worsen when bending forward or lying down – a symptom that is shared with migraines. Because of this shared symptom, people often assume they are experiencing a sinus headache, when they in fact have a migraine.

Migraine

Migraines are often associated with nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light, sound and even smell. Migraine is a common neurological disorder. Triggers vary significantly from person to person, to the point where almost anything could set off a migraine for someone with a certain level of sensitivity and adverse response to otherwise normal stimuli.Migraines can be triggered by a number of factors such as tight muscles around the neck, tension in the joints on the neck, stress levels, certain foods and drinks, hormonal changes and more.

Muscle Tension

Muscle and shoulder tension refers to the pain that develops when the muscles in the neck cannot relax, which can lead to soreness, muscle spasms, and headaches. It has numerous possible causes, ranging from joint problems to inflamed nerves.

Depending on the underlying cause, people can experience different types of neck and shoulder tension and pain, which distinct symptoms can accompany. Research suggests that as many as 71% of adults will experience neck pain and tension at some point in their lifetime. Causes vary from poor posture, poor neck alignment, prolonged computer or phone use, stress, jaw problems, poor sleep and much more.
