CHIROPRACTIC AND SPORTS INJURIES

Chiropractic offers a balanced approach to the treatment and the healing of sports injuries. By using the chiropractic adjustment to return spinal segments to their normal mobility and by using physical therapy to help the supportive tissues (muscles, tendons, & ligaments), chiropractic physicians help the injured areas return to normal function. Combined with some rest to help the healing process, athletes will find their way back on the court. Afterward, better strategies for exercise and stretching will be discussed with the athlete to help him stay on the straight and narrow path to better enjoyment of his chosen sport.

Many professional athletes are utilizing chiropractic care more and more because they realize that it helps them maximize athletic performance. Articles continue to appear in major newspapers and magazines citing such stars as Arnold Schwarzenegger, former boxing champ Evander Holyfield, and football stars such as Emmit Smith and Joe Montana proclaiming the benefits that chiropractic has meant for their careers. More and more professional and college teams are utilizing care for that same reason.

STRESS 103

Stage 3 stress is called exhaustion. In this stage, the body has run out of its reserve of body energy and immunity. Mental, physical and emotional resources suffer heavily. The body experiences "adrenal exhaustion". The blood sugar levels decrease as the adrenals become depleted, leading to decreased stress tolerance, progressive mental and physical exhaustion, illness and collapse.

Continual stress early in life disrupts the hypothalamus control cycle. Instead of shutting off once the crisis is over, the process continues, with the hypothalamus continuing to signal the adrenals to produce cortisol. This increased cortisol production exhausts the stress mechanism, leading to fatigue and depression.

Another result of stress is the clogging of the arteries by the fat and cholesterol released by the body during the attempt to fight stress. This may result in a heart attack or you may suffer a stroke by losing blood supply to the brain. Many people start drinking to combat the stress. Stress can also manifest itself into a number of diseases – depression, headaches, insomnia, ulcers, asthma, and more.

Through the use of Chinese acupressure, and emotional diffusion, Kinesiology can help reduce the stress in your life. Sometimes a shift can be achieved just by acknowledging that you are stressed. Sometimes the body needs a bit of help.

WORLD SPINE DAY/NATIONAL SPINAL HEALTH DAY

What is good posture anyway and why is it so important? Basically posture refers to the body's alignment and positioning with respect to the ever-present force of gravity. Whether we are standing, sitting or lying down gravity exerts a force on our joints, ligaments and muscles. Good posture entails distributing the force of gravity through our body so no one structure is overstressed.

Good posture encourages your muscles, joints and ligaments to work as nature intended. It means your vital organs are in the right position and can function at peak efficiency. Good posture can also contribute towards the normal functioning of the nervous system.

Without good posture, your overall health and total efficiency may be compromised. In the long term, poor posture can even affect the digestive and respiratory system.

Thus, this year World Spine Day features the theme Straighten Up. Complete City Health encourages you and your family to come into the clinic and take advantage of this opportunity to have a FREE Spine and Posture Assessment. Do not hesitate to call us today.

QUESTION AND ANSWER WITH ALEX COPPER.

Less than one third of the world's population will require foot care. This relates to all ages and all stages of the life cycle. Contrary to popular belief this means the majority of human beings enjoy pain free feet, life long. Those people in need of foot care will range from mild discomfort to those possibly needing surgery. Please note, the information contained within is for information only does not constitute direct health care advice. In the event of foot problems, we recommend making an appointment with Alex Copper on 9299 1661.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN PODIATRY?

I have been practicing for over 15 years and have a wide variety of experience. I hold a Bachelor of Applied Science (Podiatry), Graduate Diploma in Podiatry and recently completed a Masters of Podiatry, specialising in Biomechanics.

I have worked in many different areas including sports injury clinics, chiropractic clinics and as a clinical tutor at the University of South Australia. I specialise in lower body biomechanics, sports injuries and orthotic therapy. Biomechanics is the study of human movement and deals with the relationship between different parts of the body during activity and sport. Orthotic therapy involves the use of customised foot supports (orthoses) to correct biomechanical imbalances in the feet and lower body.

WHAT CONDITIONS CAN YOU TREAT?

I can treat a wide range of injuries and pain, they include:

* Sporting Injuries - such as shin splints, ankle sprains, arch pain, stress fractures and general foot and leg discomfort during activity.

* Adult foot pain - including heal pain, arch pain, pain in the ball of the foot, knee and leg pain.

* Children's foot problems - 'odd' walking patterns or feet which appear excessively flat or 'rolled in' assessed and often successfully treated, avoiding potential future deformity. children who suffer foot, leg ad joint pain after activity or who fatigue easily are also of concern.Such pains may be dismissed as 'growing pains', but are often symptoms of poorly functioning feet which can be corrected.

* Ankle, knee, hip and low back pain - poorly functioning feet provide a faulty foundation for the rest of the body leading to a misalignment of leg and pelvic joints. This causes pain and wearing of the joints and eventually osteoarthritis. The correction of foot function can allow these joints to function as designed and therefore pain free. In some cases podiatry treatment and chiropractic treatment is conducted concurrently to maximise the treatment outcomes.

* Footwear advice - can be given on which shoes are suitable for your foot type. Certain shoes may be recommended, and/or a prescription given to assist the shoe store in finding the correct shoe for you.

* Corns and calluses - can be painlessly removed and with careful assessment, intervention can be taken to prevent their return where possible.

* Plantar Warts -  Planter warts can be successfully treated by podiatry without the use of painful surgery or the need for local anaesthesia.

WHY DO WOMEN SUFFER MORE FEET PROBLEMS THAN MEN?

More women visit podiatrists than men, however, that does not preclude men from having as many foot problems as their gender counterpart. They just do not go to their podiatrist. So in actual fact, foot issues occur equally among the sexes, women are more likely to do something about it then the average man. Foot issues are not to be ignored, due to the problems that can occur in later life. Take advantage of our FREE foot and gate analysis for the month of October.

ARE SHOES THE MAIN SOURCE OF FEET PROBLEM?

The simple answer is no and provided the shoe is selected appropriate to the activity and fits the foot then foot and show should to be completely compatible. Where people do not comply, then there maybe associated problems.

In studies women are more likely to wear shoes that are smaller than the physical dimension of their human foot like the fashionable pointy toe shoe. This is often cited as the cause of foot problems but as shoes are made to last and not feet then most people wear shoes physically smaller than their feet. What appears unmistakable is the fit of the show determines the comfort and most people gauge the fit by the feeling across the ball of the foot. Hence, a tighter shoe feels more comfortable, even though they are not always better for your foot. Standing on an elevated shoe (heel) broadens the forefront and makes many higher  heel wearers feel a snugger fitting across the ball of their feet. If you experience these feelings, and/or associated pain take advantage of our October offer of the FREE FOOT AND GATE ANALYSIS for you and your family.
