But every week we see patients who ride in from Surry Hills, Pyrmont or across the bridge from North Sydney and ask us the same thing: "Could my commute be what's wrecking my back?"
The honest answer is: it depends how you're doing it. Let's break down what's actually happening to your spine on two wheels.
The Rise of the CBD Bike Commute
With more separated cycleways popping up through the city and parking getting trickier (and pricier) by the year, cycling has become one of the most popular ways to get into the CBD. It's low-impact, efficient, and doesn't come with the joint pounding that running does. But "low-impact" doesn't mean "no-impact" — especially for your spinal discs.
What Cycling Actually Does to Your Spine
When you're on a bike, your spine sits in a sustained forward-flexed position for the length of your ride. For a short, upright commute on a hybrid or e-bike, this is usually a non-issue. But on a road bike with drop handlebars, or during a longer ride, that forward lean puts more pressure on the front of your discs and increases load through your lower back and neck (which has to extend to keep your eyes on the road).

Getting Your Setup (and Posture) Right
A few adjustments go a long way. Getting your saddle height and handlebar reach properly fitted (even a basic bike shop fit helps enormously) reduces unnecessary strain. Engaging your core lightly as you ride helps take pressure off your lower back. Alternating hand positions and taking momentary breaks to extend your spine on longer rides gives your discs a chance to reset. And building up mileage gradually, rather than jumping straight into a big commute, gives your body time to adapt.
If you already sit at a desk most of the day, try to counter that flexed position with some gentle spinal extension — a short walk, a stretch, or simply standing tall — before or after your ride.
When It's Time to Get Checked
The odd bit of stiffness after a longer ride is normal and usually settles quickly.
