Is Running Bad for Your Spinal Discs? Here's What Actually Happens

It's a common concern — and it sends a lot of runners straight to low-impact alternatives out of fear, even when running isn't actually the problem. Let's separate the myth from what's really going on in your spine.

The Myth: Impact Equals Damage

The logic seems sound on the surface — every stride sends a jolt through your legs and up your spine, so surely that adds up to wear and tear over time. But your spinal discs aren't passive shock absorbers waiting to be worn down. They're living, fluid-filled structures designed to handle load, and in many ways, they need it.

Research on recreational and even long-distance runners consistently shows no clear link between running and increased rates of disc degeneration compared to sedentary people. In fact, some studies suggest regular runners have better disc hydration and height than people who sit still all day. What's Actually Happening in Your Discs When You Run

Sudden increases in distance or intensity. Going from zero to 10km overnight doesn't give your discs, joints, and supporting muscles time to adapt. Gradual progression matters far more than the sport itself.

Running on top of an existing disc issue. If you already have a bulge, herniation, or significant degeneration, the added compressive load can aggravate symptoms — not because running caused the problem, but because it's stressing a structure that's already under strain.

Poor form and weak stabilising muscles. A weak core or glutes often means your spine absorbs forces it wasn't meant to handle alone, especially over long distances.

Running exclusively on hard pavement with worn-out shoes. Surface and footwear do matter at the margins, even if they're not the main story.

Muscle soreness after a longer-than-usual run is normal. What's worth paying attention to is pain that lingers well after your run has finished, stiffness that doesn't ease up with light movement, or any pain that travels down into your glute or leg. Those are signs the issue may be coming from a disc or nerve, not just tired muscles — and it's worth getting assessed rather than just cutting back your mileage and hoping it settles.
