Is sitting destroying your spine?
Lets do a mental exercise together.
In a typical work day, how many hours are you sitting?
Most of you have breakfast-15 minutes, then lets assume 30 minutes of sitting to get to work, then usually at least 6-8 hours of sitting at work, lunch-30 mins, commute back home.. list goes on. It really adds up.
Sitting is not inherently bad, actually, it’s an essential position for us. We have bones and structures in place so that we are able to sit. The problem isn’t sitting itself but how long you’re sitting without change. I’ve had many patients tell me that sometimes they won’t get up of their chair for 3-4 hours, and this is a common thing that they do.
Now of course work gets busy and we can’t always get up to walk to the bathroom or grab a coffee.
My advice is, just get up. You don’t need to go anywhere. Don’t need to walk. Just get up off your chair. Even if it is for 20-30s to shake things out, stretch your arms, close your eyes. It doesn’t matter. Let’s break the pattern and remind your body that we can move.
