Top 3 causes of lower back pain
As a chiropractor working in Sydney CBD, there’s certain patterns that I start to recognise. One of them being, which activity causes the highest rate of lower back pain?
The answers may surprise you.
As you probably guessed, working in the city means a lot of office workers which means.. a lot of sitting.
Prolonged: probably the most common cause of lower back pain is prolonged sitting. Sitting isn’t inherently damaging to our spines, in fact, it’s an essential position our bodies need to be able to do. However, the problem is when we sit for too long. It’s not just sitting for too long that causes problems, I would say staying in any position for a long time will cause stresses on your body.
Inactivity: In general, people who move and exercise tend to not only have less pain, but the road to recovery is quicker. Our bodies were made to move so this shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Deadlifts: Deadlifts are an amazing exercise. BUT, if a patient walks into my clinic and says they injured their back at the gym, over 95% of the time it would be due to this exercise. Now for such an amazing exercise, why do so many people end up being injured? Most of the time, I would say going too heavy too quickly but that is very general. Deadlifts although simple, “just pick it up off the floor”, it requires strength in areas most people are probably weak: glutes, core, hamstrings.
